2017 Mazda CX-9 Release Date, Review, Specs – With the release of the 2017 Mazda CX-9 vehicle, the second generation of this car is confirmed. The vehicle comes after the Mazda Koeru concept that previewed this car and was launched sometime before. The vehicle is characterized by the company’s brand new Kodo design which aslo adds some luxurious and high end materials and premium designs on the inside. The engine has also been changed for this model and results in with a power reduction for this car but manages to come with better fuel economy ratings.
The Mazda CX-9 was initially launched in 2006 and received two facelifts till today, in 2010 and 2013. But the changes for those two periods were not significant as they only concentrated on minor aesthetic features of the car. The 2008 saw a powertrain change and the same engine has been on board till today. As the Mazda CX-9 was already long overdue for an overhaul, the Los Angeles Auto Show surprised us with a showcasing of the next-gen CX-9 which was scheduled for release in 2017.
The newest 2017 Mazda CX-9 is announced as a brand new model on which the future vehicles will be based on and is going to showcase us a high-end model combined with crossover characteristics the likes we have not seen so far. The SUV is scheduled to hit dealerships a bit earlier and may appear in stores by the end of this year but the release in the US may come a bit later. All the info and pictures form the LA Auto Show can be found right here in this review.
2017 Mazda CX-9 exterior
Despite the fact that the exterior of the new 2017 Mazda CX-9 model is heavily based on the Koeru concept, it does not hold the same level of aggressiveness as that vehicle does. Nevertheless, the vehicle manages to transfer a lot of elements from the concept to the production level vehicle. The front side of the CX-9 has a larger grille and slanted headlamps compared to its smaller siblings. The design of the headlamps is similar to the one from the concept but features a different kind and a more production friendly light cluster than the previous car. Also the front side receives an entirely different bumper which fits the entire front side of the car well. The vehicle has a sporty stance and it is thanks to the vertical, blade-like chrome inserts and the wide center intake which is placed on bumper part.
The back side of the car has the same sporty theme. Theback side has the Miata-like round lights with slim taillights paired with it. There is a chrome slip which flows between the two clusters but the lower section has been redesigned to fit in the look of a CX-5 and not the Koeru concept. The side view of the car is athletic and well-proportioned. The car has a long hood, large wheels, a swept greenhouse and short overhangs which add stability and give off sportiness. It is 1.2 inches shorter than its predecessor but has a 2.2 inch longer wheelbase. You can get the SUV with either 18-inch or 20-inch wheels while the color options include a choice between Soul Red, Snowflake White Pearl, Sonic Silver, Jet Black, Deep Crystal Blue, Titanium Flash, and Machine Gray.
The impressive exterior is backed up with an even more impressive interior for the 2017 Mazda CX-9. The car actually feels and looks much more expensive than you would expect to see from a Mazda car. It still holds a familiar dashboard insert found on the Mazda6, the interior adds plenty unique styling parts which make it a brand new and standalone vehicle. The upper section, for instance, has a completely unique kind of a design while the A/C vents have been redesigned. The driver side has not changed that much as it has the same instrument cluster as before. But what makes a lot of difference are the wood inserts that were added to the side doors and the center stack as it gives it a much more premium look that way. If you really want to go all the way out, you can order your car with authentic Japanese rosewood which is actually made available by a premium guitar maker especially for this vehicle. Additionally, you get Nappa leather in Supple Auburn and contrast stitching to complete the design.
The cabin is not comfortable in the sense of the materials that are used but also in terms of being quiet. There are 53 pounds of sound deadening parts added which make the cabin very pleasant to drive in. Some technological additions include a seven- or eight-inch touchscreen which is used for the Mazda Connect infotainment system. It also allows Bluetooth and cable-based connection for Pandora or Aha by Harman music streaming. There is also a 4.5-inch TFT screen in the instrument cluster while the passengers also get two, 2.1-amp USB ports. And finally you can get your 2017 Mazda CX-9 with a Bose premium audio system with 12 speakers.
The newly acquired engine for the 2017 Mazda CX-9 is going to be the 2.5-liter, four-cylinder, SkyActiv engine. The power output is 250 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, which means that it the power is reduced compared to the previous engine but the torque levels are up. But the vehicle has a lot less weight now so in FWD mode it is 198 pounds lighter while in AWD it has 287 pounds less. There have not been any official information on fuel economy but we predict it being a lot more fuel efficient from before, The car will use the a six-speed automatic transmission and also come with an optional i-Activ predictive all-wheel-drive system.
