With highlights such as an agile handling, off-road capability, lots of character, and plenty of easy-to-use technology features, the new 2017 Jeep Renegade perhaps may not be the first carlike Jeep, but it’s certainly the first one to offer Jeep playfulness and styling. It’s both practical and rewarding to drive. Its release date should be expected sometime in the first half of 2017, probably in March.
Its debut in its category was met with both enthusiasm and skepticism, as the latter group wondered whether a badge of an unquestionable off-road capable crossover could be worn by a subcompact crossover. Well, Jeep’s previous track record of creating small crossovers with underwhelming off-road capability was solely the main contention.
But with a long-terms Renegade Trailhawk and several road-tests under our belts, we can confirm those fears are unfounded. The new 2017 Renegade is a fine crossover with lots of character, better off-road capability and easy to drive even when the road gets rocky.
It is peach on the road and the suspension does an admirable job to ensure the ride quality is cushioned whenever there are bumps and potholes on the road. Interior wise, the cabin is chock full of convenience, infotainment, and luxury features. It is also one among many that provides abundant leg- and headroom.
The Renegade Trailhawk, for instance, compensates its rough-and-tumble ride quality with its off-road prowess that are unmatched in this segment. As a matter of fact, when we put it on the RTI ramp which measures the optimum articulation of the suspension, we found its ratings had even surpassed those of the Land Rover Discovery Sport and Cherokee’s Trailhawk. Thanks in part to its impression which enables it traverse close-fitting streets and a doddle to place on the asphalt.
However, there are some things that would work against the Renegade’s ultimate desire to rank atop its segment. Drawbacks include an intrusive wind noise, a mediocre fuel economy, less cargo volume, a confused and clunky automatic transmission, and a snug aft-seat legroom.
Thus we find it wise to check what its competition offers first before settling on the 2017 Jeep Renegade. Some of its alternatives include the thrilling, and sporty 2017 Mazda CX-3. The polished 2017 Honda HR-V, the powerful and similarly dainty Nissan Juke, and then there is the stylish Fiat 500X.
